CVP Proposal: Owl Protocol - Dev suite to be used to build complete apps or integrations via a REST API

Introduction

Owl Protocol is a Web3 dev suite, that allows you to build complete apps or integrations with just a REST API, and includes onboarding with social logins for users. It is deployed with the latest features such as account abstraction, gasless transactions, and diamond upgradeable smart contracts.

You can read our simple API at docs.owlprotocol.xyz.

Value Proposition

Owl Protocol brings immense value to Metis because now any developer can integrate web3, while using the latest technologies we support, meanwhile businesses can leverage their existing teams, without having to retrain or hire entire new teams. No longer do businesses create new trial or proof of concepts for web3, but rather they can integrate web3 directly into their software stack, and gain tangible, incremental improvements immediately.

This tackles a major issue we’ve seen with web3 adoption, where standalone web3 projects do not garner enough traction and ROI to justify the resources involved. One prime example is the Starbucks Odyssey project. Our approach is different, with our intuitive API, developers can add web3 features invisibly, then onboard users at their own pace.

Uniqueness Factor

Owl Protocol is the only Web3 API that allows you to build advanced web3 projects completely with an API, because all of its smart contracts are deployed with the new EIP-2535 diamond upgradeable standard. These modular smart contracts remove the limitations that projects usually run into when moving beyond their proof of concept stage, where they discover that they need to redeploy everything again or implement their own upgradeability process.

Benefits for Users

Owl Protocol allows developers to invisibly create millions of smart wallets under the hood with MPC technology, and link the authentication to social logins such as Google, Apple ID, and more, allowing the easiest onboarding path for non-crypto users.

Benefits for the Metis ecosystem

The Metis ecosystem with Owl Protocol becomes an attractive blockchain for mainstream adoption of web3 by traditional businesses, real world use cases, and non-crypto users. Developers can choose to entirely manage the user onboarding journey through social logins, and gradually introduce web3 concepts such as ownership, decentralization, and more.

Security/Audits

Diamond Upgradeable Smart Contracts are used by other leading cutting edge projects such as Aavegotchi - https://eips.ethereum.org/EIPS/eip-2535 - and our specific contracts are currently in talks to be audited by the creator of the stand Nick Mudge. Our API is also scoped to each project, which limits the risk that each smart wallet is exposed to.

Roadmap

Owl Protocol is already deployed on over 20 testnets and recently sponsored the Celestia Space Bazaar hackathon which was a great success.

EoM June 2024

  • First cohort of Owl Protocol chains’ mainnet deployment.
  • Metis blockchain testnet deployment.

July 2024

  • Metis blockchain mainnet deployment.
  • Smart Wallet SDK and UI components.

Summary

Owl Protocol aims to bring consumer dApps and web2 onboarding capabilities to the Metis ecosystem.

Building feature-rich web3 consumer applications (gaming, social) comparable to existing web2 platforms is inaccessible to most builders. Consumer DApps often have minimal on-chain features (eg. basic NFT) because existing developer platforms are limited, and smart contract code is difficult to upgrade.

Owl Protocol allows businesses to quickly integrate web3 directly into their existing stack, improving the “time to ROI”, and providing incremental tangible improvements, rather than start from scratch with a PoC that is unlikely to impress stakeholders.

This grant and collaboration would make Metis an extremely attractive chain to develop and prove web 2.5 use cases and user onboarding. Also with the CEG program, projects already considering using Owl Protocol will be incentivized to bring their project to Metis.

Hi, guys, I’m the CTO of Owl Protocol, feel free to ask any questions, thanks!

Hey guys, really cool stuff you’re building here. I got a few questions though:

The API is touted as intuitive for developers. Could you share more about the user feedback received during beta testing, and how it influenced the final design of the API and how does the social login onboarding compare in terms of user retention and engagement to traditional crypto onboarding methods?

Hi, feedback was quite positive, a lot of participants used Zapier or chatbots to integrate with our API, a couple examples:

Our API was pretty mature by the point of the hackathon though, so no feedback was really incorporated into our API. For the most part we have a pretty good roadmap in front of us in terms of high ROI features, and just to give an example of where we’ve improved the API recently:

  • Simplified Immediate Mint - we check if a collection is deployed, and if not we deploy one in the same API call
  • Simplified Mint & NFT Transfer - we check if they have a smart wallet and if so we mint to it, but if not we also deploy one, and then mint to it

In terms of user retention our tools make it possible to create the same user onboarding experiences currently in web2, though that’s left to the client to implement, for example a developer can use our API to completely abstract the web3 complexities to maximize retention. And then they can slowly introduce web3 concepts at their own pace, we think this is a superior approach that’s made possible with Owl Protocol.

Quick feature summary is:

  • REST API for simple web3 development
  • Smart Wallets (ERC4337) for users & developers
  • No-code Smart Contract Management
  • 6000+ Web2 Plugins using Zapier

Thank you for your offer. I had a few questions for you;

1-How will OWL Protocol get support from the community and influencers without providing any payment or incentives when integrating web3 while using the latest technologies as any developer supports to add great value to Metis?

2-How will the Owl Protocol allow users to create complete applications or integrations with the REST API? How will this benefit Metis and the ecosystem and even users.

Thanks.
